I live in Warwick and I work as Computer Systems Programmer at the department of Computer Science at the University of Warwick.

Interests:

Music

I used to have a list of what I listen to here, but it gets out of date, so instead look at my LastFM page.

I've been to the Glastonbury (2000, 2002 & 2003), Reading (1999, 2001, 2002 & 2004), V (2004) festivals and Creamfields (2006) festivals.

Computing

I mostly use open source in preference to anything else. I currently use RedHat Enterprise (running KDE) on my work PC and Ubuntu (GNOME) on my home computers. If I find a bug in Open Source program I tend to report it, perhaps the most important bug I have reported so far has been the security flaw in the udev package shipped by Redhat Enterprise 4 and as a result the same flaw was also found to be contained in Fedora Core versions 2 and 3.

I have insatiable curiosity and want to know everything related to computing, though clearly this is not possible so, the areas I follow most are:

  • Linux
  • Linux on non x86 hardware (I have Linux on a Sun Ultra 5, a Linksys NSLU2 and my iPod)
  • Networking
  • Open Source
  • Open standards
  • Operating Systems kernels
  • Security
  • Web technologies (such as AJAX, RSS and various APIs including the Flickr and Google maps ones)
  • XML
Sport

I'm not really a sporty person but the sports I most do/play are:
Badminton
Cycling/Mountain biking
Football

Travel

I'm interested in independent world travel (i.e. not staying in one place and not package tours) a rough map of the places I have been so far can be found on RichieMaps or roughly on the world66 site. Since finishing University the main travel I have done is:

  • 2003
    • Prague in the Czech Republic (long weekend)
    • USA east coast [New York, Washington, Boston and Philadelphia] (2 weeks)
  • 2005
  • 2006
  • 2007
Photography

I'm just starting to get into photography. I've have a Canon IXUS 430 (digital compact camera) and a Sony Alpha 100 (digital SLR) camera. See my flickr page for my latest pictures.
